What Type of Translation Is Needed for Use Outside Canada?

Translating documents for use in a foreign country requires careful attention to the specific requirements of that country's government or institutions. We provide the necessary certification, but the process can be complex.

Step 1: Know Your Requirements (Crucial)

Before ordering a translation, you must find out the exact type of certification required by the foreign organization. Requirements for marriage, residency, or business vary widely. Failing to do so can result in rejection and delays.

Step 2: Choose the Right Certification Level

Based on the requirements you've confirmed, we offer three levels of certification:

  • Regular Certified Translation (from $59): Sufficient for some countries that do not have stringent requirements.
  • Notarized Translation (from $109): Often required by consulates of countries like Mexico, Cuba, and Russia. This involves a Notary Public witnessing the translator's affidavit.
  • ATIO-Certified Translation (from $109): Required by a few specific countries like Italy and Ecuador for official purposes.

Step 3: Authentication and Legalization (If Required)

Some countries require an additional step to verify your document's authenticity. This process, sometimes called an "apostille," involves:

  1. Authentication: We can help get the notarized translation authenticated by Global Affairs Canada in Ottawa by mail.
  2. Legalization: You must then submit the authenticated document to the embassy or consulate of the destination country for final legalization.

This process can take weeks, so please plan accordingly.
